P4 - Wed 26 March 2014

Primary 4D and 4H Homework due 1.4.14

This week you have not been provided with an extra task to do with your reading book. Your target is to ensure that your reading record is up-to-date as this is the last week of reading before the Easter holiday.

Topic
This is a 2 week project - this is the second week of this task.

As part of our investigation into water we are also investigating how much water you use in your home.

Week 2 - Your task is to:-
(a) complete your chart (using tally marks) to discover how often water is used in your home for different reasons.

(b) Look at your data - can you spot an unusual activity ?
eg less/more drinking of water on a particular day - why was that - was no one at home/was it a hot day?
The washing machine was used 2 times in one day - why?

You will need to bring your data to school as we will use it to plot graphs.

Your task this week is 'Question Writer'. Write down 5 HOT questions which you could ask the character from the book you are reading. Remember a HOT question is a question which does not have a yes/no answer - also the answer should be more than a one word answer.

Vogue Polypropylene Measuring JugMaths


You should take some 'containers' (which will not leak) eg, cups, mugs, teapot, glass, bottle, etc and estimate the amount of water they will hold - you should then use a measuring jug to find out the total amount it will hold. Which holds the most, which the least - where you surprised by any?

Topic
This is a 2 week project - this is the first week with final completion due for the 1 April.

As part of our investigation into water we are also investigating how much water you use in your home.

Week 1Your task is to:-
(a) create a chart on which you can record an estimate of how much water you use.
(b) list all the different ways you use water and each day of the week.

An example is shown in the picture - but you will discover there are lots of other ways water is used in your house.

You should create a neat chart to help you complete it in Week 2.

Topic


You should research and find a newspaper article on extreme weather which has occurred anywhere in the world. You will need to read articles in newspapers or online. 

Examples of extreme weather which have happened recently are:
  • The flooding in England of thousands of homes because of the wettest winter on record.
  • The hottest year on record in Australia.
  • The USA being hit by a polar vortex.
  • Typhoon Haiyan which devastated part of the Philippines
You should then highlight the key features which make it a a newspaper article, these include;

  • A Headline
  • A Caption (if there is a picture)
  • What Happened (maybe why it happened)
  • Where it happened
  • When it occurred
  • Who was affected
  • Any Quotes (from eye witnesses) 
  • The layout
Also highlight any VCOP which up-levelled (please not every full stop).

You will need to bring your newspaper article into school.
