P4 have created a variety of animation videos which show some of the learning about the Titanic

Some of these will be shared with the parents during the P4D assembly.

Your task is to watch the movies and:

  • Identify techniques used in the animation which you thought were particularly good - why do you think this?
  • If you were going to do the work again- what would you do different and why.

You can watch the video by Clicking-Here.

Assembly - P4D
P4D have responsibility for an assembly on the Titanic - this production will be smaller than that undertaken for the Romans as P4D have to share the assembly time with P6. However just as before you need to keep focused and ensure that we are fully prepared.

Your task last week was to source costumes for the assembly - to help you 'get into role'.

We hope the creation of costumes is going well.
Notes from last week:

Costumes for Assembly

All the children have been allocated a part and so a costume appropriate to that role is required.

Please make use of material / items / clothes you already have - similar to the approach used for the wonderful costumes previously created for the Roman assembly. (We would prefer that clothes etc are recycled rather than purchasing something for the assembly).

If you have any items which may be helpful for others to use then please bring them into school.

The roles allocated are: first, second or third class passengers, crew or construction workers.

Know the script

Everyone will have been provided with a script (even if you do not have a speaking part)
Your task is to read the assembly script and prepare yourself for the part you have been given. Remember to add expression and a loud voice.

Science Investigation

The Titanic was made from steel - this is similar to the material used to make spoons and forks.

The Titanic floated (until its fatal accident), so what would you expect to happen if you put a fork or spoon into water - will it float or sink?

If it floats great - that would explain why the Titanic floated, but if it sinks then why would a ship made from steel float?

To help experiment get some plasticine, blue-tack or other modelling material. If you roll it into a ball what happens - will it float or sink?

Can you find a way to make the modelling material float?

How does this experiment help you understand why the Titanic floated?

Can you bring your models into school to demonstrate to others how you made something which sinks into something which floats.

You should play the game to find triangles with:

Science Investigation - P4H

Last week P4H had an in depth discussion on why did the Ships Crew not spot the iceberg and stay away from it.

One suggestion was that the ice was 'clear' like a window so you could see straight through it which would make it difficult to see.

You should make your own iceberg at home making use of the freezer compartment to freeze the water.

You should create 2 icebergs - 1 from fresh water and 1 from salt water - try and make them the same size and shape to be a fair test.

When they are frozen you should float them and see what happens -
  • Do the 2 icebergs float the same way - or is there a difference - if so what?
  • Do you think the iceberg would have been like a glass window?
  • Does the ice float on top of the water, or sink?
  • Did you have any problems in doing this experiment - why do you think the experiment caused a problem - could you fix it if you did it again?
To help you record your results there is a sheet to be completed - also if possible bring in photos to share with the rest of P4.

'Addition Activity'
Being able to add up numbers is a key skill. You should use the following websites to remind yourself how to perform addition.

How Maths Addition works, when the numbers in a column add up to more than 9 can be reviewed - Click-here

Check your mental maths addition - Click-here

Start with a single digit number in the middle of the dartboard - if you want to be challenged further then try a 2 or 3 digit number.

Solve the maths addition problem - Click-here

Remember you can write down your addition calculation as a chimney sum or partition if it makes it easier for you

Titanic Project - Model of inside of ship
This is the second week of this 2 week project -  with completion due for the 27 May.

As part of our investigation into the Titanic we have created a large replica of the ship on the wall. We know need to think about what it looked like inside.

You should create a model of the living quarters on the Titanic.

It would be great if you could create your model based on the area you are investigating in class, ie this will mean we will have a selection of models created for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd class passengers as well as for the crew.

Your model should be about the size of a shoebox.

Some examples (mainly for 1st class) can be found at - Click-here

We would like to use these models in animations we plan to do later in the term.

Primary 4D and 4H Homework due 20.5.14
Remember all homework is given out on a Wednesday and due in on the following Tuesday.

Reading

Please see your reading record for the pages you are being asked to read this week.
Your task this week is 'Question Writer'. Write down 5 HOT questions which you could ask about the character, setting or plot from the book you are reading. Remember a HOT question is a question which does not have a yes/no answer - also the answer should be more than a one word answer.

You have been provided with a sheet to do your questions on.

Why ? - is often a good word to use at the start of your question.

Maths

'Right Angle Activity'

Following on from the work you did outside on Friday where you hunted down right angles in the outside world, you should look for right angles in shapes at home using a right angle checker to help.
Bring a list into class of where you found your right angles.

You may spot that the hands on the clock will make a right angle at certain times of the day. As an extra challenge try and work out how many times in twelve hours the clock hands form a right angle - Click-here for an on-line activity to help.

How many times in twelve hours do the hands of a clock form a right angle?
