Spelling Activities

If you do not have access to Spelling City - you can use the following activities to help improve your spelling.

Type 'Em
Type your spelling words on the computer. Make each word a different font. Print a copy to bring into class.

Word Chains
Write each word on a strip of coloured paper and join them together to make a paper chain.

Creative Words
Use a tub and practise writing your words in: sand, rice or water or make your words using plasticine, pasta shapes, playdough or pipe cleaners. You could take a photograph of your work.

Toss a Word
Toss or roll a ball back and forth to a partner to spell each word letter by letter. You say the 1st letter then toss and your partner says the 2nd letter and so on.

Spelling Bee
Practise your spelling words in Spelling Bee style. Spell each word out loud letter-by-letter to someone at home.

Hidden Words
Draw and colour a picture. Hide your spelling words inside your picture. Bring the picture to school to share.

Word Search
Make a word search puzzle using your spelling words. Draw your own or create it in Microsoft Word or Excel or use http://www.puzzle-maker.com/wordsearch_Entry.cgi or http://www.puzzlemaker.com Make sure you bring in a copy of your work to school.

Make Music
Write a song or rap that includes all your spelling words and perform it to a friend or family member. Bring a copy of your lyrics into school.

Beat your Score
Write your spelling words correctly from memory. Can you remember them all correctly? Try and get a perfect score. For an extra challenge ask someone to time you and record your times. Can you get faster?

ABC Order
Write your spelling words in alphabetical order. For a challenge write your words in reverse alphabetical order.

Acrostic Poem
Choose one of your spelling words to turn into an acrostic poem. Remember to illustrate it.
